Aneurysms

These are weak outpouching areas on arteries and have a risk for intracranial bleeding, stroke, or growth and pressure on other structures. There are a variety of treatments to heal these dangerous lesions using open microsurgery or minimally invasive endovascular techniques.

Open Microsurgical and Endovascular treatment of Aneurysms

As the first neurosurgeon in Central Florida to offer both open microsurgical and endovascular therapy for aneurysms, Dr. Wehman is very experienced at the treatment of these complex and potentially deadly lesions. Offering both treatment modalities allows the treatment to be tailored for the best possible result.

Pituitary Tumors

Pituitary Tumors can cause severe problems with a patient's hormone function and progressive vision loss or double vision. Dr. Wehman is one of the few neurosurgeons in Central Florida who offer expert surgical treatment of these lesions.

Brain Tumors

Proper removal of brain tumors requires a wide breath of knowledge of various surgical approaches, utilizing image based guidance and precise microsurgical techniques to maximize tumor removal and preserve neurological function. Specialized knowledge of skull-base techniques allows Dr. Wehman to deal with a wider variety of tumor types and locations.

Skull Base Surgery

Brain tumors can present in many locations within the skull, and the optimal approach is necessary to achieve a complete removal with preservation of the patient's function. Dr. Wehman has received additional training in complex skull base techniques to improve patient outcomes.

Stroke

Stroke is a devastating cause of loss of function or life. Most strokes are caused by arterial blockages either by embolization (pieces breaking off and wedging in smaller arteries) or by narrowed, diseased arteries clotting off. Treatment of these blockages can involve blood thinners or open surgery in the neck or endovascular treatment in the neck or arteries of the brain.

Carotid Stenosis and Stroke

Narrowing of the arteries in the head or neck can lead to disabling or deadly stroke. This is most commonly caused by atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries from cholesterol plaque buildup. Dr. Wehman offers both open microsurgical and endovascular treatment for blockage of the carotid, vertebral and intracranial arteries supplying the brain.

Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)

These are abnormal connections of arteries and veins that have a risk of intracranial bleeding, seizures, or progressive loss of function. They may require a combination of treatments (embolization, surgery, and/or radiation).

Complex Vascular Lesions

Dr. Wehman has a special interest in arteriovenous malformations and fisulae. He treats both adult and pediatric cases for this condition through a variety of treatment modalities. Open microsurgery, minimally invasive endovascular surgery, and radiation treatment are used individually or in combination to personalize the treatment and achieve a cure in these complex lesions.

Degeneration of the Spine

Herniated disks and spinal stenosis (narrowing) can cause severe pain, numbness or even weakness or paralysis. Mild cases can often be treated without surgery, but more severe cases may require surgically removing the pressure off the nerves or spinal cord. Some cases with abnormal movement may require a fusion (immobilization of a limited segment of the spine). Treatment is rapidly developing toward more minimally invasive techniques that speed recovery and limit surgical intervention. Artificial Disc Replacement is now offering improved outcomes to older fusion techniques for many patients.

Disk herniations or Arthritis Can Cause Severe Symptoms

Disk Herniations or progressive arthritis that compresses the nerves or spinal cord can cause severe pain and progressive numbness or weakness. In some cases patients can develop significant diability. Dr. Wehman offers a variety of minimally invasive treatments to remedy the particular problem and speed the patient back to normal activities.

Spinal Tumors

Tumors of the nerve roots and spinal cord require delicate microsurgical technique to achieve maximal removal with the goal of protecting and recovering neurological function.

Facial Pain & Hemifacial Spasm

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a condition of severe episodic facial pain. It can be cured with surgery, though some cases require other treatments. Hemifacial Spasm is a condition of episodic contraction of one side of the facial muscles. It can be disfiguring and sometimes painful, but is curable with surgery.

Trigeminal Neuralgia and Hemifacial Spasm

Trigeminal Neuralgia and hemifacial spasm are often caused by compression of the nerve by an artery. Dr. Wehman has a special interest in microvascular decompression (MVD) in which he mobilizes the artery away from the nerve and places special padding to keep the artery away, thereby allowing the nerve to heal and eliminating the symptoms.
